Depression is one of the most common emotional challenges faced by Americans. Depression can be brought on by loss of a relationship, teen pressures, death of a loved one, loss of a job or financial security, illness, moving to a new community or many many other changes in life circumstances. Depression can also be an inherited disease state. Some of the symptoms of depression are feelings of hopelessness, frequent crying episodes, mood swings, sleep and eating dysregulation, difficulties in experiencing pleasure in normal activities, lethargy, and an inability to focus. In teens it can also contribute to truancy and academic problems. Some people can also feel anxious and agitated.
Depression can stem from two main causes: biological imbalances (such as hormonal imbalances post-partum, or hereditary influences) or psychological challenges (such as those resulting from childhood problems or relationally challenging dynamics). Part of our initial therapeutic work together will be to determine which of these two causes is primary for your situation. Determining the roots and triggers for your depression will help us know how best to explore, support and transform your psyche’s depressive feelings. If your depression is biologically based, hereditary, or just plain too overwhelming to allow you to stay engaged in your life, then you may need to combine therapy with medication. If this is the case, then I can work in concern with your psychiatrist to create a plan that is tailored to your needs.
Due to my theoretical orientations, we will work on your depressive symptoms with an approach that includes homework exercises’ that you can work on between sessions to support your body and mind to have non-depressive experiences. We will also do whatever level of in-depth therapeutic exploration that is necessary to understand the series of life experiences that have led to your current psychological challenges. No one chooses depression. It is ALWAYS due to a series of life events that were too overwhelming for your psyche to make sense of and move beyond. Looking deeply at the parts of your past that may have led to your current feelings is a critical part of our work together.
It is important to remember that depression is a powerful pattern that often takes a significant period of time to release. You will need to be dedicated to your process and our work together to experience lasting relief. Once we begin a working relationship, I will remain completely dedicated to helping you find your unique path to a happier, more fulfilling life.
