Anxiety

In the United States today, and especially in the Bay Area, we are all surrounded by pressure to do everything fast and to excel at all we do. Many people develop anxiety as a response to this stress or as a response to earlier life challenges, traumatic experiences or many other unexpected life changes. Examples of experiences that can cause anxiety are a breast cancer diagnosis, sexual identity struggles, or divorce.  Symptoms of anxiety include restlessness, agitation, sleep disturbance, excessive worrying, pressured speech, an inability to relax and/or focus, physical jumpiness, feelings of fear about personal abilities, fears of personal failures, fears of safety, and more.

Although there are a small number of people who develop symptoms of anxiety as a result of physical imbalances (such as a thyroid imbalance) most people are anxious due to life history and/or current circumstances. Our work together will include developing body-centered practices to help you develop mastery in calming your bodies automatic anxiety responses and psychological exploration to discover what aspects of your history and current lifestyle are contributing to your anxiety. If your anxiety is rooted in experiences from your distant past (such as past traumatic experiences or parental neglect) then you may need to give your body and psyche an opportunity, via a combination of our therapeutic work together and practices you can do on your own, to literally recalibrate the way in which your neuro-pathways work in response to real or perceived stress.

Anxiety often limits an individual’s ability to be able to fully enjoy the present moment. This often keeps individuals experiencing anxiety from being able to have a deeply fulfilling life. Our therapeutic work together will be aimed at creating a life that is experienced and appreciated fully.
